Dear IT professional,

There was a time where I was as lost and stressed-out as they come. I mean, I could not even sleep at night, was cranky, not my self and pretty much dreaded life! And quite frankly, I'm surprised my wife stayed with me through those bad times.

Because you see, I didn't go to college to become an IT professional.  In fact, I majored in music at Georgia State University.  After spending my time out of college trying to make it as a musician, I got married and quickly had to start producing an income. 

Back in college I met a guy named Scott who majored in Information Systems.  I kept in touch with him after I got married and called him for advice on how to make money.  After all, he was driving a nice car, just bought a new house and was the envy of my friends.

He encouraged me to get into IT and said that the opportunity was good if I got serious about it.  Back then, I couldn't even spell IT.  That was the running joke.  I was also never serious.  That's why he used to call me an ID-10-T around his IT friends.  I had  no idea was he was talking about until later.  Much later. :-(

So around 1996, I was quickly thrown into a system admin role at a Microsoft consulting partner here in Georgia. 

I got that job without having any experience or education.  Scott, who was currently working there as a consultant gave me high recommendations after mentoring me to become an MCSE. (Behind closed doors however, he told me that I had better not screw this up because his reputation was riding on it.)  - Even still to this day, I have no idea why Scott put his neck on the line for me.  I guess that's what great friends are for.

But not all things were good.  It was a starting position and I had high hopes and dreams of getting more certifications and learning the ropes under a well seasoned certified professional.  After all, I had tests passed, but no experience.

To my surprise, that all changed on my first day.  I came into work in the approved khaki's and pull-over shirt and was immediately sent home to put on a suit and tie.

Nothing like adding more stress to an already stressful situation!

During those days, there was a shortage of IT professionals.  This was a good thing and a bad thing at the same time.  With that being the case, I was immediately made a consultant and was sent to my first client at a Fortune Top 50 company without knowing a thing about consulting or IT for that matter.

As you can imagine, I was scared out of my mind!

You see, before I got hired, I dabbled a bit in HTML.  Nothing big, just a little bit to put up my music websites.  The consulting firm I was now working for needed a web programmer, and there was no one in sight but me.  Since I had put down HTML on my resume to appear to have some experience I was immediately called for that duty. 

The company translated my experience as "web programmer." 

Now, you and I both know there is a HUGE difference between the two.

That day, my life changed for the worse. 

I wasn't prepared for what was about to happen over the next two years.  I was struggling beyond all belief just to keep up and keep my clients, team members and partners happy.  I was working from 6am till 10pm just to survive  There was too much to learn and as you know in technology, there was something new everyday I woke up to. 

I had two children at home and honestly can't remember what they were like during those years.  It is sad but true that I have to do some calculations just to remember what age they were back then. 

Life in IT Would Never Get Easier...  You'll Never Know Everything...  So I was told...

With my growing frustration, I decided to ask my managing director for a little advice.  I asked him would I ever get my time back in this industry or if I was forever doomed to this IT hell. 

He said what I didn't want to hear... "I am sorry Joey, that's the path you've chosen so you'll have to live with it or get out of it all together..."

Have you ever thought that or came to that conclusion?

You can imagine, I was a flat mess and believing now I had no hope.

Then, it all changed in the fall of 1998. I mean, it came lightning fast.

I went from deep despair to a new man!  I'm telling you, it was like a switch went on in the server room upstairs...

Everyone took notice.

the Hidden Component that I Had Been Missing..." 

I became like the typical IT professional.  I subscribed to about 20 IT trade journals, went to every IT conference imaginable, got certified in many technologies, learned programming, became a certified trainer and spent hours upon hours trying to keep up!  I still couldn't get ahead of the curve.

Every Saturday, my wife and I would go to the local bookstore to "spend some quality time" together.  This amounted to me going one way in the bookstore and her going another.  Usually I just camped out in the computer section trying to learn to get around some problem I was facing.  This was stress relief.  Not.

However, November 11th, 1998, something new happen.  I grabbed a leadership book that was sitting on the front counter that struck my eye.  I don't know why I grabbed it.  It had nothing to do with IT.  This was out of the ordinary.  You could say it was a coincidence, but some would argue that coincidences are mathematically impossible.  I am now convinved and you'll see why below...

I am so glad I did, because my life took a twist as well as my IT career.  A HUGE twist.

I went to the couch there in the store and sat down with it just to relieve my mind from the technical maze swimming around in my head.  In that book, I discovered things like: how to treat people; how to get people and managers on my side; as well as leverage other people's strengths among other things.

Light bulbs were going off left and right.  If you had of been there, you would have thought that I discovered the secrets to the universe by my excitement.

I believe I did.

Armed with this book, I quickly proceeded to the counter, purchased it and tucked myself away in my office for several hours taking copious notes and tearing each page apart. 

You would have thought I was studying for a certification exam by the intensity of my expression.

Then, 90 days later the fireworks started to go off...

• The first was the 1999 Microsoft Project of the Year presented by Bill Gates himself.
   
• The second was an article that appeared in Windows Enterprise Magazine about the cutting-edge Knowledge Management system I built for my Fortune Top 50 client.
   
• The third was being invited to speak for the 1999 Microsoft Developer Days here in Atlanta in front of 1500 IT professionals explaining Windows DNA and the new 2000 architecture.
   
• The fourth was being promoted to a senior consultant at the firm I was working for.

As you can see, whatever it was that I learned, it had amazing results.  This all happened simultaneously while reducing my hours and stress!

My schedule also changed.  Now, I was sleeping at night and no longer had to learn everything and work from 6am till 10pm.  I started going in at 10am after spending time with my wife and children in the morning and coming home around 5pm before dinner.

During this time amazing things were happening, I took my first three week vacation and traveled across the entire United States with my family and came back to a tripled income.

For the First Time in My Life, I Was a Star. 
Not a Rock Star Like I Once Dreamed, but Close...

In March of 2000, I was offered a CIO/CTO job for the author's company of the book I read.  Now, imagine the coincidence there. 

Just to recap what happened:

1) I read a book in 1998 that wasn't IT related

2) My career blasted into the stratosphere

3) I was offered the CIO/CTO position for the company of the author of the book I read in 1998!

4) My career blasted into outer space!

Wow!

Let me stop here real quick to say that if you are thinking this might not help you, and that you may not experience similar results as I have, keep in mind that I was...
