We discovered that he just needed to connect what he was learning to real life situations - and his learning took off!
Needless to say, adapting his curriculum to something that worked for HIM, using real life situations to learn, helped this “slow learner” to score a 28 on his ACT, and enter college on a 100% paid scholarship majoring in....you guessed it - business.
My point is that when kids have a REASON to learn, they will learn things they might otherwise ignore or tune out.

Job Security. In our economy, it’s anyone’s guess what will happen next. Nobody is secure in a traditional job these days, and any wealthy person will tell you that you won’t get rich working for someone else. Better Jobs. Understanding how a business works also makes better employees. Harvard Business School did a study on these kids and not only was there a significant increase in confidence and leadership skills, but over there was a 32% increase in interest in continuing on to college. These were kids that weren’t even interested in finishing high school! Many of these kids run very successful businesses today and/or have college degrees.
Better Money Management Skills. Obviously math becomes much more interesting when they are figuring how much profit they just made! In addition, having more money to manage will give them more opportunity to learn how to give, save and invest.
Most kids work a part time job at sometime in their life, why not teach them what they need to know to create their own part time job? Having a business will supply that extra money and looks very impressive on a resume or college application!

Kids takes everything literally. DON’T BE SARCASTIC. They don’t know what sarcasm is, even if you think they do. If you say, “Stop acting like a monkey”. Guess What?
They are going to START acting like a monkey.
I’m amazed at parents who tell their kids, “Stop Running around.”
Guess what, the kid hears, “Run Around” and does exactly that.
Not very effective, is it? You’ve got to remember kids think differently, so...
Secret: State Commands in the Positive
Give them permission to be good. Lets look at these minor corrections.
Instead of “Stop eating Junk food” Say, “Eat these yummy carrot sticks” Instead of “ Why are you yelling”, say, “lets talk in quite voices for a minute”

2. Stop asking WHY!
Guys, seriously. Do you really think your child is going to give you a rational explanation?
Example: little Sarah hits her baby brother for no apparent reason. Mom asks, “Why did you hit him Sarah?”
This is what Sarah is NOT going to say, “Well, first I was playing with clay. I had a hard time making it look like a rocking chair so I got frustrated. My brother was nearby so I took out my anger on him.”
NO WAY!
Secret: There is no truly rational explanation for your child’s behavior, stop looking for one!
Instead, ask HOW.
Let’s redo our conversation with Sarah, shall we?
Sarah, “How did hitting your baby brother make you feel about yourself?” Expect to see shame, even defiance in a reply. That’s OK.
Then ask, “Can you think of other ways of being mad?” And offer positive suggestions.
3. Focus on the IMPORTANT things and the other things will fix themselves
Right now, your child is acting up for a reason that makes sense only to your child.
Nine times out of ten, that reason is because they feel THREATENED a situation and just need positive attention and love.
Your job is NOT to stop the tantrums, yelling and other irritating behavior, but to make him or her feel SECURE. I can’t emphasize this enough.
Give them the gift of knowing they are secure, that your love is not going anywhere.
Lets look at this situation from their lens: you want to go out to dinner with your new man. You see it as a quite respite from single mother-hood.
You kid sees it as “MOMMY is leaving me, and if that happens, who is going to feed me? Who is going to protect me? Who is going to love me? I must stop her from leaving. For my own survival”.
Think I’m exaggerating that one? NOPE. I asked my daughter about it years later. And this is EXACTLY what she told me she was thinking at the time.
Secret: Address the Security Issue First
I’m not going to give a way all the secrets, just know that there is a way of making your child feel safe, instantly, DIRECTLY into their unconscious mind.
For now, I’ll just say that you can use the positive permission language from the other secrets to get it across. It might sound like this:
“I know you are upset, but guess what, when I get back, you and Mommy are going to (fill in the blank of their favorite thing to do with you)”. Then just walk away. Seriously. They need to experience you walking away….
