So How Did I Do It?

I used to have a regular day job, you know. I went to class all day, went to work at night and worked all night long for $7 an hour.

As you can guess, I hated it.

We both know that poker is much more fun than working for the man. I used to play in my spare time and although I used to lose money, I didn't mind. Poker served as a fun distraction from the stress of work so I carried on.

Eventually, after seeing so many people have so much success with poker online and on TV, and after getting frustrated with losing, I decided to get serious about the game and see If I could start winning too.

But I was worried:

What if I lost everything?

I didn't want to risk my money on something I'd only done as a hobby up until now. I wasn't sure I'd actually be able to win anything. After all, I hadn't won so much. So why would I suddenly start winning in the future? I decided to only risk as much as I could afford, and then it was no big deal if it didn't work out.

What if what I learned didn't work?

Even worse, what if I spent ages learning how to play well, spent money on books and courses, invested time seeking out and harassing experienced pros, only for it all to be a big waste of time? What if poker really is all luck and no skill? I figured that if people can play professionally, and play well consistently, then I could too.

What if I couldn't get better?

The unthinkable - what if, even after being led by the hand and shown everything I needed to know, I still lost? I thought about this and decided that if I could learn from people who'd already had success (and could prove it), I'd be OK. 

Even with all that to worry about, I figured I still at least had to give it a shot. I knew for a fact that dumber people than me were making money playing online poker. If they could do it, so could I.

So I started taking my game seriously. I read every book I could get my hands on, scoured the internet for months and talked to any online pro that would give me the time of day.

During this learning phase, I made countless adjustments to my game and, before long, I had a decent bankroll going. It was only small mind you, but I had one nonetheless.

Not long after that, I moved up to the bigger tables and was buying in for $100 and $200 at a time and maintaining a solid win rate. It certainly beat my $7hour dead end fast food job!

It wasn't easy. It was an expensive tutelage but it all worked out in the end. I experienced huge swings and sick losses as I found my feet. I developed and tested countless strategies through painful trial and error.

Imagine That I Offered You a Bet

I'll give you $20 every time you toss a coin and it lands on heads. But it costs you $10 for each throw. So if you flipped the coin 100 times it would cost you $1,000.

Because the odds of a coin landing on heads or tails are 50/50, you'd win roughly half the time for 50 winning throws and earning $20 each for a total win of $1,000.

So if it cost you $1,000 and you made $1,000 in winnings, you'd have a total profit of...

That's right: $0.00. Zero. Zilch.

And this is exactly how it would go in real life since tossing a coin is 100% luck.

Poker, on the other hand, is an entirely different story. There is some luck but you can control it with your skill. In poker, you might be able to bend those 50/50 odds to become 75/25... and if you could, the outcome would look like this:

100 throws at $10 per throw = $1,000 in costs.

75 wins at $20 per win = $1,500 in winnings.

Total profit: $500.

Now obviously you can't bend the odds of tossing a coin but you can manipulate the odds you give your opponents at the poker table through what cards you choose to play, where you sit at the table, how much you bet and even who you play against.

This sort of scenario might sound silly but it's not! It's exactly this kind of thinking that led me to developing the secret tactics that I used on a daily basis to slaughter online poker players, and basically force them to hand over their cash at "card-point."

Last on the list are your cards. The ONLY time your cards matter is if you get to a showdown. Until then, the only use for your cards is as a beermat for you to put your drink on. When you don't show your cards, it doesn't matter what they are, right?

Of course, you'll reach a showdown occasionally and your cards will have to stand up and win. Having the right cards at the right time will virtually guarantee success because every time you have to turn them over, they're winners.

Knowing how to abuse these three things will turn you into a ghost at the poker tables. You'll constantly be haunting your opponents when they are weak but when they finally get a strong hand, you will have vanished into thin air.
