During those days, there was a shortage of IT professionals. This was a good thing and a bad thing at the same time. With that being the case, I was immediately made a consultant and was sent to my first client at a Fortune Top 50 company without knowing a thing about consulting or IT for that matter.

I was working from 6am till 10pm just to survive There was too much to learn and as you know in technology, there was something new everyday I woke up to.

I had two children at home and honestly can't remember what they were like during those years. It is sad but true that I have to do some calculations just to remember what age they were back then.

Life in IT Would Never Get Easier... You'll Never Know Everything... So I was told...

With my growing frustration, I decided to ask my managing director for a little advice. I asked him would I ever get my time back in this industry or if I was forever doomed to this IT hell.

He said what I didn't want to hear... "I am sorry Joey, that's the path you've chosen so you'll have to live with it or get out of it all together..."

Have you ever thought that or came to that conclusion?

You can imagine, I was a flat mess and believing now I had no hope.

Then, it all changed in the fall of 1998. I mean, it came lightning fast.

I went from deep despair to a new man! I'm telling you, it was like a switch went on in the server room upstairs...

Everyone took notice.

the Hidden Component that I Had Been Missing..."

I became like the typical IT professional. I subscribed to about 20 IT trade journals, went to every IT conference imaginable, got certified in many technologies, learned programming, became a certified trainer and spent hours upon hours trying to keep up! I still couldn't get ahead of the curve.

Every Saturday, my wife and I would go to the local bookstore to "spend some quality time" together. This amounted to me going one way in the bookstore and her going another. Usually I just camped out in the computer section trying to learn to get around some problem I was facing. This was stress relief. Not.

However, November 11th, 1998, something new happen. I grabbed a leadership book that was sitting on the front counter that struck my eye. I don't know why I grabbed it. It had nothing to do with IT. This was out of the ordinary. You could say it was a coincidence, but some would argue that coincidences are mathematically impossible. I am now convinved and you'll see why below...

I am so glad I did, because my life took a twist as well as my IT career. A HUGE twist.

I went to the couch there in the store and sat down with it just to relieve my mind from the technical maze swimming around in my head. In that book, I discovered things like: how to treat people; how to get people and managers on my side; as well as leverage other people's strengths among other things.

Light bulbs were going off left and right. If you had of been there, you would have thought that I discovered the secrets to the universe by my excitement.

I believe I did.

Armed with this book, I quickly proceeded to the counter, purchased it and tucked myself away in my office for several hours taking copious notes and tearing each page apart.

You would have thought I was studying for a certification exam by the intensity of my expression.

Then, 90 days later the fireworks started to go off...

The first was the 1999 Microsoft Project of the Year presented by Bill Gates himself.
The second was an article that appeared in Windows Enterprise Magazine about the cutting-edge Knowledge Management system I built for my Fortune Top 50 client.
The third was being invited to speak for the 1999 Microsoft Developer Days here in Atlanta in front of 1500 IT professionals explaining Windows DNA and the new 2000 architecture.
The fourth was being promoted to a senior consultant at the firm I was working for.

As you can see, whatever it was that I learned, it had amazing results. This all happened simultaneously while reducing my hours and stress!

My schedule also changed. Now, I was sleeping at night and no longer had to learn everything and work from 6am till 10pm. I started going in at 10am after spending time with my wife and children in the morning and coming home around 5pm before dinner.

During this time amazing things were happening, I took my first three week vacation and traveled across the entire United States with my family and came back to a tripled income.

In March of 2000, I was offered a CIO/CTO job for the author's company of the book I read. Now, imagine the coincidence there.

Pretty soon the tantrums started. I couldn’t take “my honey” out to dinner anymore because the kid would have a fit. SCREAMING, YELLING, accusing her mother of not loving her any more.
This went on for months, and my patience wore thin. Then I lost my temper at the kid, and Mom got defensive.
Pretty soon my wife and I were FIGHTING CONSTANTLY. There was NO romance left and we were each secretly imagining life without each other again.
This was the worst situation any parent could have found themselves in! Does any of this sound familiar?
It’s not like we didn’t try. We read parenting books, watched DVDs. Even took advice from strangers. No one could believe my daughter's behavior!
I began asking myself: Am I such a terrible father? What am I doing wrong? Did I make a mistake?

So Where Did We Find Hope?

At the time, I was in a professional training class for something called Neurolinguistic Programming, which is a scientific approach to human behavior and motivation. I learned a clue to the answer in that class.

I learned the REAL reason why my wife’s daughter was doing what she was doing.

We experimented with MANY different techniques until we found the one that literally transformed this problem child into our little Angel overnight.

Many years later, I asked MY daughter why she behaved like she did. And her answer confirmed everything I had learned about child behavior.

Here Are the TOP 3 Parenting Mistakes Every Parent Makes And Why They Hurt You and Your Child

1. Watch your language!

Your Language as a parent is extremely important to be mindful about. Think of your child as a SPONGE. He or she absorbs everything and never stops. Even when you think they are not listening.

Kids takes everything literally. DON’T BE SARCASTIC. They don’t know what sarcasm is, even if you think they do. If you say, “Stop acting like a monkey”.
Guess What?

They are going to START acting like a monkey.

I’m amazed at parents who tell their kids, “Stop Running around.”

Guess what, the kid hears, “Run Around” and does exactly that.

Not very effective, is it? You’ve got to remember kids think differently, so...

Secret: State Commands in the Positive

Give them permission to be good.
Lets look at these minor corrections.
Instead of “Stop eating Junk food” Say, “Eat these yummy carrot sticks”
Instead of “ Why are you yelling”, say, “lets talk in quite voices for a minute”
This comes from a very powerful Hypnotic technique called embedded commands. This is very powerful. Just by switching around a negative statement into a positive one, you will see instant changes in behavior. Read on, there is more…

2. Stop asking WHY!

Guys, seriously. Do you really think your child is going to give you a rational explanation?

Example: little Sarah hits her baby brother for no apparent reason. Mom asks, “Why did you hit him Sarah?”

Think I’m exaggerating that one? NOPE. I asked my daughter about it years later. And this is EXACTLY what she told me she was thinking at the time.
