If there was one thing I knew about Ashkan, it was that he made money, and he made a lot of it, he owns three homes and he likes to travel... often. I never knew exactly how he made his money, other than the fact that he made this money trading forex. He explained to me how the forex (foreign currency) markets worked, and how 4 trillion dollars changes hands in the forex market every single day. But this was as far as I would get with him, he never showed me precisely how he extracted big profits from the forex markets.

When Ashkan sat down and showed me exactly how he makes his money in forex, it was very surprising. What I had envisioned was that he had some secret trading equation, or he knew some people at a bank that told him when there would be a lot of Euros bought, or something like that. I have to admit that I was wrong, what Ashkan told me was this:

+ Many of his forex trades lose money

Before Ashkan taught me how he makes money trading forex, I had thought Ashkan had some kind of a magic touch when it came to trading - maybe he never lost money, and I found out I was wrong.

He confessed this - he has slightly more winning trades than losing trades, but his winning trades were worth far more than his losing trades, and this was how he consistently made money. This was extremely surprising to me.

I figured Ashkan would sit and watch his trades until they were over, but he told me that he often entered his trades into his computer and then walked away. Like most traders, he will often check on his trades to see how they are progressing, but he said this is mostly out of habit and, in fact, he admitted this - watching his forex trades too much makes it difficult to make money. This was very interesting to me, as I had assumed his forex trading was hard work and involved long hours in front of the computer.

+ His forex trading is not complex, it is a simple, profitable method

Ashkan has simple trading charts set up to find high probability setups in the market. He does have several trading screens in his office, but that is simply his preference. He explained to me how his trades occur sporadically, so he does not trade every day.

Probably the most amazing part of his trading is this - nearly all of the time Ashkan is simply waiting for a trade. He showed me how most of the time he scans the forex markets looking for an ideal trade setup. Once in a while an ideal trading setup will occur, and then he will take it. This was very interesting to me, as I assumed he entered trades all day long, every day. It was also surprising to hear that he learned that he made more money when he took fewer trades.

+ He treats all of his forex trades the same

Ashkan does not know when a trade will make money and when a trade will fail. He takes all of the forex trades that his trading system tells him to take. I thought that since he is such a great forex trader he probably knows when a trade will be certain to make money. He admitted to me that he enters each forex trade not knowing what will happen. He manages his risk on each trade, keeps it to an acceptable level and then - win or lose - he lets the trade unfold. I was a bit disappointed to hear this, I suppose I believed he had some secret knowledge, or at the very least, he knew when he placed a winning trade in the forex market.

+ He told me he wanted to become a better trader with my help

Of all the things that my friend Ashkan, the millionaire trader, told me, I was most surprised when he told me that he needed my help to become a better trader. This was the same guy who has been paid handsomely by investment banks, brokerage houses, and proprietary trading firms, to make money and show others how to make money trading forex. I failed to understand why he needed my help to improve his forex trading.

How was I, a guy who did not even understand the forex market, supposed to help a millionaire forex trader?

I thought maybe he had lost a boatload of money on a big trade, or maybe the stress of trading was getting to him. I had heard about forex traders cracking under the pressure of having to produce consistent gains. Maybe Ashkan was asking me to help him overcome all of the stress. I thought that maybe this was the reason he wanted my help.

Then he told me.

Ashkan said "I know you can improve my forex trading system. If I let you see how I make money in forex, together we can improve my trading system." Ashkan admitted to me how he consistently lost while trading in the beginning, and he often considered giving up on forex, but he knew he could make a living trading, so he stuck with it. He said he would never want to do anything different for a living. However, he also wanted me to know how he was absolutely convinced I could help him make even more money trading forex. Ashkan was right, of course. We DID improve his trading system, but more on that later.

I wanted to know more about how Ashkan made his big money in forex, so I began to pump him for information about his method. What I learned was very surprising.

- He told me how many of his trades would lose a lot of money, but over the long run he rakes in big profits because he has a long term perspective

I thought Ashkan made money 90% of the time, or more. I knew he made a lot trading forex, but I did not realize he had so many losing trades. He showed me how his losers are much smaller than his winners. Showing me his trading records, he explained to me that losing trades are part of the game, and he was hoping to automate his trading system to make it easier to sit through losing trades. He knew how many forex traders have difficulty sitting through losing trades and often take a break from trading when a few losers appear.
