What You Want -- versus What You Think You Want -- in a Man

Earlier on, I asked you to pick the top 3 attributes or traits of your dream man.  Hopefully, you did that little fun exercise at the top of this page.
 
Now, listen closely.

Just because you picked the top 3 qualities of your dream man does not mean those are the things you want in a man.

Now, I can almost hear you say, "Huh?"  Let me explain.

The top 3 things you answered are what you think you want in a man -- and not necessarily what you really want in a man.

In my 17 years of relationship coaching, I've found that ...
       what most women think they want in a man
              is incompatible with
                    what they really want.

No wonder they can't find their dream man!  There's a big discrepancy between the two.

I'm sure you've known women who've gushed about finding their dream man -- saying he has all the things they've been looking for.  And yet later on, they find out that their dream man turns out to be Mr. Wrong.  Perhaps this has even happened to you?

This all has to do with the ineffective pattern I spoke of earlier.  You have an unconscious pattern of being attracted to an imaginary picture of an "ideal" man that, in reality, is completely wrong for you. 

What good is having a tall, dark and handsome man, for instance, if he's not good for you?  What's the use of having a boyfriend with a great sense of humor if he also has traits that you can't stand?  Would you want to be married to a romantic, sweet and affectionate man if he has issues that are intolerable to you?

While it's impossible to find a man that is perfect in every way, you can find a man who has all the qualities that are truly important to you, and with whom you have the highest likelihood of being happy.

I've found that when I've given women a simple exercise involving the traits of a man that truly matter a lot to them, they began to realize that the things they thought they couldn't live without weren't nearly as important as they thought.

I'm sure you've known women who, upon meeting a man who did not seem to have the ideal qualities she wanted, ended up falling in love with the man and living happily ever after.  Many such women admit that if they had not gotten over their petty ideals of male perfection, they would not have found the love of their life. 

Doe this mean you have to "settle" for someone who is not as great a man as you want to have?

No, not at all.  You never have to compromise what you absolutely must have in a man in order to get a man who is good for you.  This is not at all like wanting a tasty filet mignon but getting a bland dish of steamed broccoli instead just because it's good for you.  It's not at all like wanting someone as exciting as Rhett Butler in Gone with the Wind -- but getting someone like Amos Hart, the quintessentially boring, but adoring husband of Roxie Hart in Chicago. 

It's about getting a wonderful man with optimum qualities -- a man who is your most preferred choice based on what's really important to you.  And isn't that the best definition of a dream man in the first place?

The child was literally RUNNING my wife's life and there was no father in the picture to help carry the load.

Regardless of the warnings, I knew she was the woman for me. So we moved in together.

Pretty soon the tantrums started. I couldn’t take “my honey” out to dinner anymore because the kid would have a fit. SCREAMING, YELLING, accusing her mother of not loving her any more.

This went on for months, and my patience wore thin. Then I lost my temper at the kid, and Mom got defensive.

Pretty soon my wife and I were FIGHTING CONSTANTLY. There was NO romance left and we were each secretly imagining life without each other again.

This was the worst situation any parent could have found themselves in! Does any of this sound familiar?

It’s not like we didn’t try. We read parenting books, watched DVDs. Even took advice from strangers. No one could believe my daughter's behavior!

I began asking myself: Am I such a terrible father? What am I doing wrong? Did I make a mistake?

 

So Where Did We Find Hope?

At the time, I was in a professional training class for something called Neurolinguistic Programming, which is a scientific approach to human behavior and motivation. I learned a clue to the answer in that class.

I learned the REAL reason why my wife’s daughter was doing what she was doing.

We experimented with MANY different techniques until we found the one that literally transformed this problem child into our little Angel overnight.

Many years later, I asked MY daughter why she behaved like she did. And her answer confirmed everything I had learned about child behavior.

So if I can succeed at STOPPING the Tantrums, with NO parenting experience, then YOU can definately do it.

The good news is there is hope for you as a parent and it is NOT your fault.

The "solution” is simple and easy to learn... but it took me a LONG time to get it right. Please take this as hard-earned wisdom... from one friend to another.

Here Are the TOP 3 Parenting Mistakes Every Parent Makes And Why They Hurt You and Your Child

1. Watch your language! 

Your Language as a parent is extremely important to be mindful about. Think of your child as a SPONGE. He or she absorbs everything and never stops. Even when you think they are not listening.

Kids takes everything literally. DON’T BE SARCASTIC. They don’t know what sarcasm is, even if you think they do. If you say, “Stop acting like a monkey”.
Guess What?

They are going to START acting like a monkey.

I’m amazed at parents who tell their kids, “Stop Running around.”

Guess what, the kid hears, “Run Around” and does exactly that.

Not very effective, is it? You’ve got to remember kids think differently, so...

Secret: State Commands in the Positive

Give them permission to be good.
Lets look at these minor corrections.

Instead of “Stop eating Junk food” Say, “Eat these yummy carrot sticks”
Instead of “ Why are you yelling”, say, “lets talk in quite voices for a minute”

This comes from a very powerful Hypnotic technique called embedded commands. This is very powerful. Just by switching around a negative statement into a positive one, you will see instant changes in behavior. Read on, there is more…

2. Stop asking WHY! 

Guys, seriously. Do you really think your child is going to give you a rational explanation?

Example: little Sarah hits her baby brother for no apparent reason. Mom asks, “Why did you hit him Sarah?”

This is what Sarah is NOT going to say, “Well, first I was playing with clay. I had a hard time making it look like a rocking chair so I got frustrated. My brother was nearby so I took out my anger on him.”

NO WAY!

Secret: There is no truly rational explanation for your child’s behavior, stop looking for one!

Instead, ask HOW.

Let’s redo our conversation with Sarah, shall we?

Sarah, “How did hitting your baby brother make you feel about yourself?”
Expect to see shame, even defiance in a reply. That’s OK.

Then ask, “Can you think of other ways of being mad?”
And offer positive suggestions.

3. Focus on the IMPORTANT things and the other things will fix themselves

Right now, your child is acting up for a reason that makes sense only to your child.

Nine times out of ten, that reason is because they feel THREATENED a situation and just need positive attention and love.
